The Musing of Skulls

This series of paintings are musings on The Seven Deadly Sins: gluttony, pride, wrath, greed, sloth, lust and envy. The sins were created to guide humans in their spiritual quest for heaven and eternal life. I am interested in the list not for its explanations of our "fallen" status, but how these vices speak to spiritual truths. Unique among humans is the ability to see beauty in devastation, waste and ruin. Will seeing the beauty of destruction help us relate to it, to our actions and to ourselves?

These painting each represent their own story of the danger, the beauty and the effect of vices. Exploring these “old-fashioned” vices let me understand their place within contemporary North American life. Each has a different story to tell.

Explore the "big" links to see a small portion of a large high resolution image of the painting. This will allow you to see some of the detail of each painting, the swirls and whorls and unique features of the paintings. A fast internet connection is highly recommended.

Or explore the YouTube interviews on each painting, or watch the introductory video drawing a link between this work and Georgia O'Keefe and the memento mori movement.

Paintings are available currently as a set, $1200 for all seven. Valid only until the first painting is sold individually. Individual paintings are $200 each. Please contact me for more details.

Reviews

"What a beautiful finish to an ambitious project. Each painting is marvelously aggressive. I especially enjoy the detail slices shown on your new site; your technique is powerful and confident.

Your video interviews are fabulous. Artists are notorious non-wordsmiths, but your beautifully articulated narration provides intelligent insight into your motivations, the Seven Deadly Sins project as a whole and a deeper understanding of each painting. Brilliant!"
